Recommended Books For Student Of Knowledge By Shayk Ibn Uthaymeen (Intermediate)

Translation:

Books To Read To Learn Creed (Aqeedah)

These four books are by Shaykh al-Islam Imam Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab, may Allah have mercy on him.

1. The Three Fundamental Principles (Thalathat al-Usul)
2. The Four Rules (al-Qawaʿid al-Arbaʿ)
3. Unveiling the Doubts (Kashf al-Shubuhat)
4. The Book of Tawheed (Kitab al-Tawheed)

These three books are recommended Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him.

5. al-ʿAqeedah al-Wasitiyyah, which covers Tawheed of the Names and Attributes. It is one of the best books written in this field and is worthy of reading and reviewing. (Sharh By Ibn Uthaymeen Volumes 1& 2)
6. al-Hamawiyyah (Sharh By Ibn Uthaymeen)
7. at-Tadmuriyyah, both of which are broader than al-Wasitiyyah. (Sharh By Ibn Uthaymeen)

Extra Books For Student Of Knowledge To Learn

8. Explanation of at-Tahawiyyah by Imam Abi al-ʿIzz.
9. Ad-Durar as-Saniyyah fi al-Ajwibah an-Najdiyyah, compiled by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Qasim, may Allah have mercy on him. (This has not been translated)

Because of this, a student of knowledge must study these books with a teacher who understands the Salafi creed, so that he may clarify the expressions that contradict the belief of the righteous Salaf.

Second: Hadith

1. Fath al-Bari, the commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari by Ibn Hajar al-ʿAsqalani, may Allah have mercy on him. (Small portion translated)
2. Subul as-Salam, the explanation of Bulugh al-Maram by as-Sanʿani. This book combines hadith and fiqh.
3. Nayl al-Awtar, the explanation of Muntaqa al-Akhbar by ash-Shawkani. (Has not been translated)
4. ʿUmdat al-Ahkam by al-Maqdisi. This is a concise book, and most of its hadiths are found in al-Bukhari and Muslim, so there is no need to research their authenticity. (Portions of the sharh of this by Ibn Uthaymeen)
5. Al-Arbaʿin an-Nawawiyyah by Abu Zakariyya An Nawawi. This is a beneficial book that includes good manners, a sound methodology, and very useful principles, such as the hadith, “Part of a person’s good Islam is to leave that which does not concern him.” (Ahmad, 201, at-Tirmidhi (2318), graded good by an-Nawawi in Riyadh as-Salihin, p. 73, and graded sound by Ahmad Shakir in al-Musnad (1737)) This is a principle that, if you make it your path in life, it would be enough.

Also the principle regarding speech in the hadith: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” (al-Bukhari, Book of Manners, and Muslim, Book of Lost Property, Chapter: Hospitality)

6. Bulugh al-Maram by al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-ʿAsqalani. It is a beneficial and useful book, especially as it mentions the narrators and who declared the hadith authentic or weak, and he comments on the hadiths regarding their soundness or weakness.
7. Nukhbat al-Fikar by al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-ʿAsqalani. It is a comprehensive summary. If a student of knowledge understands it fully and masters it, it will suffice him over many other books in hadith terminology. Ibn Hajar’s method in composing it is useful, based on the technique of analysis and classification. A student who reads it will feel motivated, as it stimulates the mind. I recommend that the student of knowledge memorise it, for it is a valuable summary in the science of hadith terminology.
8. The Six Books: Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan an-Nasa’i, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmidhi. I advise the student of knowledge to read them often because this provides two benefits.

First: Returning to the original sources.

Second: The repetition of the names of narrators becomes fixed in his mind. So when the name of a narrator from al-Bukhari appears in any chain, he will know it is from al-Bukhari’s narrators, and this provides a valuable benefit in the science of hadith.

Third: Hanbali Fiqh

1. Adab al-Mashi ila as-Salah by Shaykh al-Islam Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab, may Allah have mercy on him.
2. Zad al-Mustaqniʿ fi Ikhtisar al-Muqniʿ by al-Hajjawi. This is one of the best concise texts in fiqh. It is a blessed, concise, and comprehensive book. Our teacher, the great scholar ʿAbd al-Rahman as-Saʿdi, may Allah have mercy on him, advised us to memorise it, even though he himself memorised the text of Dalil at-Talib. 3. ar-Rawd al-Murbiʿ, the commentary on Zad al-Mustaqniʿ by Shaykh Mansur al-Buhuti. (Not translated)
4. ʿUmdat al-Fiqh by Ibn Qudamah, may Allah have mercy on him. (Sharh By Hatem Al Haj)
5. Al-Usul min ʿIlm al-Usul, a concise book that opens the door for the student.

Fourth: Inheritance Law (Fara’id)

1. Matn ar-Rahbiyyah by ar-Rahbi.
2. Matn al-Barhāniyyah by Muhammad al-Barhani. It is a concise and beneficial book that covers all aspects of inheritance. I believe al-Barhāniyyah is better than ar-Rahbiyyah because it is more comprehensive in one aspect and contains more information in another. (Not translated)

Fifth: Tafsir

1. Tafsir al-Qur’an al-ʿAzim by Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him. It is good when it comes to tafsir by transmitted reports and is reliable and beneficial, although it rarely addresses grammar and rhetorical devices.
2. Tayseer al-Karim ar-Rahman fi Tafsir Kalam al-Mannan by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Saʿdi, may Allah have mercy on him. It is a sound, simple, and reliable tafsir. I recommend reading it.
3. The Introduction of Shaykh al-Islam on Tafsir, which is an important and beneficial introduction.
4. Adwa’ al-Bayan by the scholar Muhammad al-Shanqiti, may Allah have mercy on him. It is a book that combines hadith, fiqh, tafsir, and the principles of fiqh. (Portion translated)

Sixth: General Books in Other Disciplines

1. In grammar: Matn al-Ajurrumiyyah, a concise and simplified text.
2. Also in grammar: Alfiyyah Ibn Malik, which is a comprehensive summary of Arabic grammar.
3. In the Prophet’s biography: The best I have seen is Zad al-Maʿad by Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him. It is a very beneficial book that discusses the Prophet’s life in all aspects and derives numerous rulings from it.
4. Rawdat al-ʿUqalaʾ by Ibn Hibban al-Busti, may Allah have mercy on him. It is a short but beneficial book that contains many points of wisdom and noble qualities of scholars and hadith narrators and others. (Not translated)
5. Siyar Aʿlam an-Nubalaʾ by adh-Dhahabi. This book is extremely beneficial, and it is essential for a student of knowledge to read and review it. (Not translated)
