Translation: Shayk Al Islam said: A third group from the people of kalam among the Muʿtazilah and those who followed them came close to them in approach, affirming for Him the names without what they contain of attributes.
Some of them considered al-ʿAlim (the All-Knowing), al-Qadir (the All-Powerful), al-Samiʿ (the All-Hearing), and al-Basir (the All-Seeing) as pure synonymous proper names. (Just like some Asharis and Maturidis we see today)
Others said: Knowing without knowledge, Powerful without power, Hearing and Seeing without hearing or sight. Thus, they affirmed the name without what it contains of the attribute.
The discussion of the corruption of their statement and the clarification of its contradiction, by plain reason matching authentic transmission, is mentioned in other writings.
All of these people flee from one thing only to fall into its equivalent or into something worse, along with what necessarily follows for them of distortions and negations. Had they reflected properly, they would have treated what is alike as alike and distinguished what is different, as reason requires.
They would have been among those who were given knowledge and who see that what was sent down to the Messenger is the truth from his Lord and that it guides to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy. But instead, they are among the people of false unknowns resembling reasoned matters, engaging in sophistry in rational issues and qarmata in matters of transmission
