Summary of the Meaning of Allah’s Name Al Mu’min
Al Mu’min has two main meanings in Arabic.
- The first meaning is tasdiq, meaning to affirm something as true and to confirm it with certainty.
- The second meaning is aman, meaning safety, security, and protection from fear.
Both meanings are correct for this noble name of Allah.
When this name is used for Allah, it means that Allah is the One who confirms the truth. He confirms His own Oneness, and He has testified that none has the right to be worshipped except Him. He also confirms the truthfulness of His prophets by supporting them with clear signs and proofs, so people know that they truly came from Him.
Al Mu’min also means that Allah gives safety and security. His creation is safe from Him ever wronging them, because Allah is completely just and does not oppress anyone. He gives His believing servants safety from fear, especially on the Day of Resurrection. Those who believe in Him and keep their iman pure from shirk will have true security and guidance.
This name also shows that Allah always fulfils His promises. He confirms for the believers what He promised them of reward, victory, support, and Paradise. He also confirms for the disbelievers what He warned them of punishment if they persist upon disbelief. Every promise and warning from Allah is true and will certainly occur.
A person who believes in this name should become a source of safety for others. A true believer is not one whose tongue, hands, actions, or behaviour harm people. The believer is the one whom people can trust with their lives, wealth, honour, and safety. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ connected true iman with people being safe from a person’s harm, especially neighbours and Muslims.
So, the name Al Mu’min teaches that Allah is the One who confirms the truth, fulfils every promise, protects His servants, grants security, and never wrongs anyone. It also teaches the believer to live with honesty, trust, safety, and mercy towards others.
End of Summary.
Al Mu’min (The Giver of Security and the One Who Confirms the Truth)
May His majesty be exalted and His names be pure.
The Linguistic Meaning
It has two meanings in the Arabic language.
The first is tasdiq (affirming as true).
Al Zajjaj (d. 311AH) said: “The root of iman (faith) is tasdiq (affirming as true) and trust.” Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
وَمَا أَنتَ بِمُؤْمِنٍ لَّنَا
And you will not believe us. (Yusuf 17)
Meaning: because of your intense love for Yusuf, you will not believe us. (Tafsir al Asma, al Zajjaj, p. 31)
The second is aman (security), which is the opposite of causing fear.
Allah said:
And He gave them safety from fear. (Quraysh 4)
Aman (security) and amanah (trust) have one meaning. It is said: “I became safe, so I am safe,” and, “I gave safety to someone else,” from amn and aman, meaning security. Amn (security) is the opposite of fear. Amanah (trust) is the opposite of betrayal. Iman (faith) is the opposite of kufr (disbelief). Iman, meaning tasdiq (affirming as true), has takdhib (calling false) as its opposite. It is said: “Some people believed in him, and some people called him false.” In the mighty revelation, Allah said:
وَهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ الْأَمِينِ
And by this secure land. (al Tin 3)
Meaning: the safe one, meaning Makkah. A man described as amanah is someone whom everyone feels safe with. It was also said: he is someone whom people feel safe with and they do not fear his harm. A man described as amanah is also one who believes what he hears and does not call anything false, when he feels at ease with everyone and trusts everyone. (Lisan al Arab, Ibn Manzur, 1/140–141)
Its Occurrence in the Qur’an
It occurs in one verse, which is the statement of Allah:
السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ
The Source of Peace, the Giver of Security, the Guardian over all. (al Hashr 23)
The Meaning of the Name with Regard to Allah
Al Dahhak (d. 105AH) narrated from Ibn Abbas: “Al Mu’min means: His creation is safe from Him wronging them.”
Qatadah (d. 117AH) said: “Al Mu’min is the One who affirmed by His statement that He is the Truth.”
Ibn Jarir (d. 310AH) said: “Al Mu’min is the One who gives His creation safety from His wrongdoing them.” He attributed it to Qatadah. (Reported by Ibn Jarir from him with a hasan isnad. Tafsir al Tabari, Ibn Jarir al Tabari, 28/36)
Al Shawkani (d. 1250AH) said: “Al Mu’min means: the One who granted His servants safety from His punishment. It was also said: the One who confirms His messengers by making miracles appear at their hands. It was also said: the One who confirms for the believers what He promised them of reward, and confirms for the disbelievers what He warned them of punishment. Mujahid (d. 104AH) said: Al Mu’min is the One who declared His own Oneness through His statement: ‘Allah bears witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Him.’” (Fath al Qadir, al Shawkani, 5/207. See also al Jami li Ahkam al Qur’an, al Qurtubi, 18/46, and al Minhaj, al Halimi, 1/202)
Al Alusi (d. 1270AH) said: “Al Mu’min was said to mean: the One who confirms Himself and His messengers, upon them be peace, in what they conveyed from Him, exalted is He, either by speech or by creating the miracle. Or it means: the One who grants His servants safety from the greatest terror, or the One who makes them safe from it, either by creating calmness in their hearts or by telling them that there is no fear upon them. It was also said: the One who gives creation safety from His wrongdoing them. Thaʿlab (d. 291AH) said: the One who confirms the believers in their iman.” (Ruh al Maʿani, al Alusi, 28/63. See also Tafsir Asma Allah, al Zajjaj, p. 31, al Nihayah, Ibn al Athir, 1/69, al Tahawiyyah, p. 94, al Iʿtiqad, al Bayhaqi, p. 55, and Sharh al Asma, al Razi, p. 189–190)
Al Saʿdi (d. 1376AH) said: “Al Mu’min is the One who praised Himself with the attributes of perfection, and with complete majesty and beauty. He sent His messengers and sent down His Books with signs and proofs, and He confirmed His messengers with every sign and proof that points to their truthfulness and the correctness of what they brought.” (Taysir al Karim, al Saʿdi, 5/301)
The Effects of Believing in This Name
First, Allah, exalted is He, is Al Mu’min, the One who declared His own Oneness. He informed us of His own Oneness in His statement:
شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ
Allah bears witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Him. (Al Imran 18)
So Allah confirmed Himself through this. His confirming is His knowledge that He is truthful, and this confirming is iman.
Allah also informed us that He will show His creation the signs of His Oneness, the proofs that He alone is worthy of worship, and His greatness. Allah said:
We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that He is the Truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is Witness over all things? (Fussilat 53)
Second, He, exalted is He, confirmed His prophets by making amazing signs appear at their hands. These signs make clear to people that they were truthful in their claim that they were the messengers of Allah, and they lead people to enter the religion of Allah. Allah said:
Indeed, in that there is a sign for you, if you are believers. (Al Imran 49)
And He said:
And I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allah and obey me. (Al Imran 50)
Third, Allah confirms for His servants what He promised them of victory in this life, being given rule in the land, and reward in the Hereafter. He also confirms for the disbelievers what He warned them of punishment and disgrace in this life and the Hereafter. Allah said:
Allah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely make them successors in the land, as He made those before them successors. He will surely establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and He will surely replace their fear with safety. They worship Me and do not associate anything with Me. Whoever disbelieves after that, they are the defiantly disobedient. (al Nur 55)
Whoever looks at the sirah (life story) of the Prophet ﷺ and his rightly guided caliphs will know the truth of Allah’s promise to His sincere servants.
Allah said:
The people of Paradise will call out to the people of the Fire: We have found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised to be true? They will say: Yes. (al Araf 44)
And He said:
They will say: All praise is for Allah, who fulfilled His promise to us and made us inherit the land. We settle in Paradise wherever we wish. Excellent is the reward of those who worked. (al Zumar 74)
Fourth, He gives safety from His punishment to those who do not deserve it, and He grants safety to His believing servants on the Day of Resurrection. Allah said:
Those who believed and did not mix their iman with wrongdoing, they will have security, and they are rightly guided. (al Anam 82)
Allah said:
Is the one who is thrown into the Fire better, or the one who comes safe on the Day of Resurrection? (Fussilat 40)
And He said:
The greatest terror will not grieve them. (al Anbiya 103)
And He said:
Whoever comes with a good deed will have better than it, and they will be safe from the terror of that Day. (al Naml 89)
Fifth, as for the believer, the believers must be safe from his evil and harms.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “By Allah, he does not believe. By Allah, he does not believe. By Allah, he does not believe.” It was said: “Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “The one whose neighbour is not safe from his harms.” Meaning: a man is not a believer with complete iman until his neighbour is safe from his harms, meaning his evils and dangers. (Sahih al Bukhari 6016)
The Prophet ﷺ also said: “The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.” (Sahih al Bukhari 9, Sahih al Bukhari 10, Sahih al Bukhari 6484. Sahih Muslim 40 and 42 from Abdullah ibn Amr and Abu Musa al Ashari. Sahih Muslim 41 from Jabir ibn Abdullah)
Fadalah ibn Ubayd said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during the Farewell Hajj: “Shall I not tell you who the believer is? He is the one whom people trust with their wealth and their lives. The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand people are safe.” (This is a sahih hadith. Reported by Imam Ahmad, 6/21: Ali ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Abdullah narrated to us, Layth informed us, Abu Hani al Khawlani informed me, from Amr ibn Malik al Janbi, who narrated to me from Fadalah ibn Ubayd with it. The rest of the hadith says: “The mujahid is the one who strives against himself in obedience to Allah, and the muhajir is the one who leaves sins and wrong actions.” This is a sahih isnad. Abu Hani is Humayd ibn Hani. Layth is Ibn Sad. Abdullah, the one who narrated from him, is Ibn Wahb. Abd al Warith ibn Ubaydullah followed him in narrating it with Ibn Hibban, 25, al Mawarid. Ibn Majah 3934 also reported it from Abdullah ibn Wahb, from Abu Hani, from Amr ibn Malik, that Fadalah ibn Ubayd narrated it to him. So Ibn Wahb narrated it directly from Abu Hani. Ahmad also reported it, 6/22: Qutaybah ibn Said narrated to us, Rushdin ibn Sad narrated to me, from Humayd Abu Hani with it. Rushdin is weak. Al Tirmidhi 2762 and al Nasai, 8/104, reported it from Qutaybah: Layth informed us, from Ibn Ajlan, from al Qaqa ibn Hakim, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe, and the believer is the one whom people trust with their blood and wealth.” Its isnad is hasan because of what has been said concerning Muhammad ibn Ajlan.)
